A clash occurred between the law enforcement agencies and workers of the Robintex garment factory in Rupganj, Narayanganj.
Reports indicate that around 50 individuals, including law enforcement personnel, were injured during the confrontation.
Following the incident, the agitated workers blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning in front of the factory on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Bhulta union of the upazila.
Among the injured were Lieutenant Mubin, Soldier Bandhan, Soharab and Mehedi from the army.
Workers who were injured include Shafia, Runa, Malina, Majeeda and Rupu.
Local residents and eyewitnesses reported that since Monday morning, the Robintex garment workers had been protesting against the layoff of workers and had been staging a sit-in inside the factory.
On Wednesday morning, the workers continued their protest inside the factory, demanding various issues be addressed.
When law enforcement personnel attempted to persuade them to return to work, a dispute ensued.
The workers threw water bottles at the law enforcement officers, who responded by using batons to disperse the crowd.
The workers then moved outside the factory and blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway by placing electric poles on the road.
When law enforcement attempted to remove the workers from the highway, a series of clashes broke out between them.
The workers threw bricks and stones at the law enforcement officers, resulting in injuries to 50 individuals.
The injured were later taken to various hospitals for treatment.
Several protesting workers said: “Before Eid, the authorities laid off 50 of us without notice. We have been raising our demands peacefully inside the factory. However, the army personnel began baton-charging us, which led to the injuries of 40 workers, including women. The injured were taken to hospitals.”
Inspector Mizanur Rahman Mizan of the Bhulta police outpost said: “There was discontent among the workers of Robintex Garments. When law enforcement officers asked them to return to work, they launched an attack. As a result, several individuals, including law enforcement officers, were injured."
