National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Monday demanded that the interim government designate the Awami League as a terrorist organisation, cancelling its registration as a political party.
“We are witnessing attempts to rehabilitate the fascist Awami League and the NCP, meanwhile, has stated its stand on the issue plainly,” he said while addressing virtually an Iftar gathering of the party in Narayanganj.
“If there is any attempt to rehabilitate the Awami League, our party will resist it. The Awami League can no longer be regarded as a political party after so many events [related to the July uprising] took place in the country.”
Nahid said the NCP has been launched with a new political aspiration to rebuild Bangladesh. “With the people’s expectations, love, and their support, we aspire to pursue a new sort of politics which will shape the country’s future.”
He said while people want a change, different parties are advocating for the old system.
“Many are reluctant to embrace reforms. But, those of us who were a part of the July movement will work for reforms. We need a new constitution. A new Bangladesh cannot function based on the old constitution,” the NCP leader added.
